When the weather is cold and your family is craving something thick and warming, how about making a delicious stew? A stew is a mixture of solid foods such as meat or fish and vegetables, which have been cooked slowly or simmered in liquid to combine the flavors well. The liquid is served as well as the chunky bits.

Common stew ingredients include meat, chicken, seafood, fish, potatoes, carrots, beans, and fruit. Wine, water, beer, or bouillons are commonly used as the stew liquid and seasonings help to add more flavor.

Is Stew the Same as Soup?

First of all, stewing is the only cooking method, which will tenderize cheap, tough cuts of meat, which is how it developed. A stew contains large pieces of meat, fish, and vegetables and there are more of these ingredients in the finished dish than liquid.

Stew is served as a main dish rather than as an appetizer and always contains chunky ingredients. Soup can be served as pureed liquid only without any bits in and is always served in a bowl or deep dish. A chunky stew can be served on a plate.

Making Your Stew Rich and Flavorful

There is a limit to how flavorful a combination of meat, vegetables and water can be, which is why it is useful to know how to make your stew recipes flavorful.

Stew is a very versatile dish and can work well with many different combinations of meat, vegetables, liquids, herbs, and spices. It is a good idea to season your stew meat with plenty of salt and pepper before searing them in a hot pan.

You can also roll the meat in flour to thicken up the dish. Check the meat is browned all over before adding it to the liquid, to stop it from drying out. This applies to other meats such as pork, lamb, and chicken.

You will need to saut your vegetables in a pan, and then add liquid. You can use juice, water, wine, broth, or anything else. Scrape the bottom of the pan to remove any stuck on bits. These add a lot of flavor. Put the meat back in the pan and cook slowly until everything is tender.

You should check the pan periodically to see if you need to add more liquid or seasoning or give it a stir. When the stew is done, you might want to throw in some cider, lemon juice, crispy crumbled bacon or parsley to brighten up the overall flavor. You can serve it in big bowls accompanied by warm bread to mop up the juices.

It is easy and fun to make stew. Whether you want to make a Jamaican brown stew chicken or an Irish stew, using the above tips will ensure your stew recipe comes out perfectly.

you need to balance what you eat. you HAVE to eat a bigger portion of salads than the portion your eating of carbs. and the protein has to be as big as your hand. dont eat sweets on a daily basis and dont eat ANY fat. when people stop eating carbs your just losing muscle but when you eat correctly you burn calories equaly. and if you dont eat carbs, protein and salads whatever you eat turns to fat in your body. so the best thing is eat the three of them and eat fruits! you can eat any fruit except for coconut because that saturated fat. hope this helps because this actually really works you lose abour ten pounds in one month

My friend went to a dietian and this is what she told her to do:

For breakfast have fruits and yogurt or healthy cereal like Special K or Shredded Wheat (try not adding sugar either)

Eat a salad for two meals a day for a week. You can add things like turkey and small amounts of egg and cheese if you want but try and stay away from any acidic dressing (like vinegar).

For snacks eat fruits and veggies or a snack bar; the ones she found most similar to the ones her doc gave her were South Beach Diet Bars and they were a lot cheaper than she was paying for the other ones!

Stay away from caffeine, sugar (if you must have sugar use brown sugar), no sweets (if you must have sweets have dark chocolate), bleached flour (have whole wheat as a substitute; wheat pasta (small amounts) and wheat flour) and very little red meat (try only having it once or twice a week WITH your meal not AS a meal).

This is straight from the dietians mouth and she lost 10lbs the first week. So it does work, promise!!
