Diet and Healthy Eating Tips

« Advance Wellness Research Acai Berry Discount Offers   Why Oprah recommends the acai berry for weight loss. »

The American Heart Association recommends adopting healthy eating habits permanently, rather than impatiently pursuing quick diets in hopes of losing unwanted pounds in a few days through fad quick weight loss plans.

Many of these fad diets, such as the notorious and outright silly Cabbage Soup Diet, will undermine your health, cause physical discomfort (abdominal discomfort and flatulence and lead to the yo-yo effect of gaining weight soon after losing it. In other words the risks aren’t worth the rewards.

Quick-weight-loss diets generally put far too much importance on one particular food or type of food. They don’t include a mixture of foods or at least a healthy balance, a violation of the first principle of good nutrition, eat a balanced diet that includes a variety of foods. If you are able to stay on such a diet for more than a few weeks, you may develop nutritional deficiencies, because no one type of food has all the elements a human being needs for good health.

The Cabbage Soup Diet is an example. The myth of this diet is that cabbage soup is some sort of weight loss potion. The diet supposedly helps heart patients lose 10 to17 pounds in seven days prior to surgery. Even if the weight loss claim were true, all the damage due to a lack of a host of important nutrients would far outweigh (pun intended) the benefits of losing the weight. There are no magic beans, or magic cabbages, or miracle foods for weight loss and good nutrition. Moderation in eating all the major food groups is the best bet.

These crazy diets also violate a second important principle of good nutrition which is that eating should be enjoyable.. It’s impossible to stay on these diets for a long time because they’re so bland. Imagine eating cabbage soup, nothing but cabbage soup, for even a few days much less for a whole week. By Wednesday you’d dread meal time, and by Friday you’d never again want to smell a cabbage much less eat the soup. They’d carry you away in a straight jacket by week’s end.

Boredom isn’t the only reason fad diets aren’t good ones. Many don’t mention physical activity, for example, walking 30 minutes most or all days of the week. While a lifestyle of little physical activity can lead to heart problems, exercise is a major element of maintaining your correct weight. When a diet mentions no need for a workout, run the other way.

Quick weight loss is possible. Just don’t fall for tricks or gimmicks that might end up destroying your health.

    1. dont bank on the words 'fast','easy','simple' & 'quick'….to stay safe, you shoudnt lose beyond 3 pounds of fat per week

    2. start brisk walking 40-60mins a day…get a dog or 2 if you find your walking routine boring..or if you are at a gym, experiment all forms of
cardio available and stick to all that you like

    3. drink only water,100% natural/fresh fruit/veggie juices, lowfat milk and lots of green tea

    4. severely limit carbs n fat but eat lean proteins and veggies very well..make sure you eat a good breakfast!foods generally that aid fat loss-
fruits, oatmeal, milk, raw nuts, fish, beans, veggies, small chunks of dark chocolate and herbal teas.

    5. do adequate amounts of pilates/yoga/strength training to get the best from your cardio, make slight adjustments to your workout routines
every 2 or 3 weeks to avoid plateaus

    6. be smart when eating out or at events/functions(such as preparing your own meal & eating in advance)

    7. dont trust myths like "no food after 7pm"…you have to stay nourished to lose fat,..the best you can do if you are scared to eat is perhaps
drink a glass of ice chocolate lowfat milk mixed with a tsp of instant softened oatmeal…

    8. Always push yourself n never give up!but get enough rest too…Stay focused on your goal and God bless you…

size 0 isnt too skinny. as long as your body is muscle and not fat. eat small healthy meals, or snacks, throughout the day. not just 3 large meals. exercise to gain muscle which will make you look tone and thinner. muscle weighs more than fat, but it looks better. go figure? lol =] just try to do it safely.

Do yourself a big favor and educate yourself about food calories and exercise. Won't take long and will serve you well the rest of your life. You can eat anything you want. If your total calorie intake doesn't exceed your requirements, you won't gain weight. If you eat less, you'll loose weight. Very simple really. And, you don't have to be hungary.

My friend went to a dietian and this is what she told her to do:

For breakfast have fruits and yogurt or healthy cereal like Special K or Shredded Wheat (try not adding sugar either)

Eat a salad for two meals a day for a week. You can add things like turkey and small amounts of egg and cheese if you want but try and stay away from any acidic dressing (like vinegar).

For snacks eat fruits and veggies or a snack bar; the ones she found most similar to the ones her doc gave her were South Beach Diet Bars and they were a lot cheaper than she was paying for the other ones!

Stay away from caffeine, sugar (if you must have sugar use brown sugar), no sweets (if you must have sweets have dark chocolate), bleached flour (have whole wheat as a substitute; wheat pasta (small amounts) and wheat flour) and very little red meat (try only having it once or twice a week WITH your meal not AS a meal).

This is straight from the dietians mouth and she lost 10lbs the first week. So it does work, promise!!

Try South Beach Diet. It focuses on low-fat and low-carb products and it's easy to stick to it and it has nothing to do with fiber related products.
Author of the South Beach Diet is Dr. Arthur Agatston M.D.

Try it! You are just going to reduce your intake of carbs and fats.
