« How to Stay in Top Shape with the Best Cardio Exercises?   Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Mexican Culture »

by Jon Cardozo

If you have ever read a book on goal setting, you know that one of the most important concepts is being able to divide your goal into smaller chunks. Writing your goal on paper and pointing out obstacles from the very beginning are also important to help you reach your destination. However, I think the most important aspect of goal setting has to be the emphasis on long-term gains instead of short-term achievements.

When I look back on my successes and failures in life, I noticed a trend which is a little bit disturbing. Too many times I’ve focused on short term results. If a new project wasn’t yielding significant progress immediately, I would pretty much eliminate it right away. I gave up on many worthwhile projects easily, because I got bored or distracted. I suppose that many people are like me and tend to abandon a goal very quickly. You may be wondering what the connection is with strength training or muscle building.

I hope you see the relevance to weight training. Instead of focusing on immediate results, you have to be in this for the long haul. Instead of focusing on supplements, you must learn the foundations of muscle building. I’ve explained in other articles that supplements are not necessary (and usually not even helpful) when it comes to muscle building.

Let’s face it, supplements are not the core of a muscle building program, regardless of what the advertisements out there might be telling you. The latest supplement fad from the bodybuilding gurus will not improve your workout or make up for your lack of self discipline.

Why do bodybuilding supplements sell so well? They do well simply because so many bodybuilders are looking for the magic pill that will instantly deliver incredible results. Unfortunately, so many people in our society have become accustomed to looking for shortcuts and short term gratification. It’s particularly sad when you consider that learning how to gain weight naturally is not as difficult as it may seem. The real magic pill is combining the right knowledge (weight gain diet plus proper workout routines) with determination. The beginner must understand that weight gain, like most worthwhile goals, requires diligence over the long term.

Many experts trainers who have the muscles to back up their theories are warning us about trying to rely on supplements. Supplements will have only a slight benefit for the advanced bodybuilder, and they might have zero benefit for a beginner.

Looking for the easy way out will almost certainly leave you disappointed and probably leave your wallet significantly lighter.

It may be more exciting to look for that special supplement that will magically deliver the results you are looking for, but in the long run a trainee looking for shortcuts will surely be disappointed. This lesson applies not only to bodybuilding and strength training; rather, it is a valuable lesson that can help you reach any goal you set. If you’ve done the research and gained the necessary knowledge, and if you set your goal properly (more on this later), then you can be certain that you’re on your way to accomplishing your objective. Do not be discouraged if your initial results are disappointing -focus on the cumulative effects of your daily actions and what this will bring you in the months to come.

A very recent study reviewed by HealthDay suggests that omega-3 supplements do not help people who have had a heart attack, at least in terms of cardiovascular health. There are studies both ways. Here’s a link to prefer actual fish. The “dose” is two servings per week of cold-water fatty fish.

From Lisa: “I am 46, cycle (25 miles) or run (12 miles) daily and I’m not unusual - many people want to be in control of their bodies and health (I do what I do to stave off severe menopause symptoms in lue of antidepressants or HRT so readily prescribed by doctors as the ‘only’ treatment) and it works - yes, its incredibly difficult some days to keep up, but I refuse to take a drug versus healing my body with my own will and natural supplements and treatments - it is possible to get better without the pharma-option doctors insist on.
This woman needed what she needed to get well and accepted the dignity and drive - bravo to her example.”

Wow, Lisa, you really have no clue. Anyone lucky enough to have not suffered from a major and potentially fatal chronic illness which affects one’s entire life should be careful with such judgmental words. There are REAL diseases that do require prescription meds to alleviate symptoms and even save lives; alas, natural supplements are often times ineffective.

Believe it or not, sometimes we just don’t have control over our bodies and our destiny. My late husband did all the “right” things, ran marathons, didn’t smoke, had a very positive attitude, ate well and he died at age 46 of a rare heart condition. All the willpower, drive, healthy habits did not protect him from an early death.

I’m sincerely happy that your efforts and natural remedies work for you but please, please understand that many others do not have that result. When you’ve been through a major trauma/death of a loved one, you understand this illusion of control and you are humbled by it and treasure life even more. Yes, it’s important to take responsibility for our health and wellness. But in the end, it doesn’t matter what size you wore, how many hours you worked out at the gym or how much willpower you had. What really matters in the end is the kindness, love and compassion that we show one another. That’s what made my husband so special, not his marathon times or his weight. 12 years later, I still miss him everyday.
